Donald Trump has been brutally mocked by golf fans after boasting that the Ryder Cup would not be happening this week in New York City if it wasn't for him.

Europe and America's top golf stars will collide in the sport's prestigious biennial competition over the coming days, with the two teams set to battle it out at iconic Long Island course Bethpage Black.

Yet according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, the Ryder Cup is only still going ahead because Trump recently signed an executive order to prevent a Long Island Rail Road strike from happening.

The president has agreed to establish an emergency board to review the dispute between the LIRR and the unions that represent its employees, meaning a strike will not disrupt this week's golf competition.

'This event is one of the greatest sporting events in the world and it would not be taking place this year without President Trump's help,' Leavitt said in a press conference on Monday.

'President Trump signed an executive order last week preventing a strike that would have crippled the New York City area ahead of the tournament and at the request of the five labor unions who all represent workers on the Long Island Rail Road.'

Leavitt then read out a quote from USA Ryder Cup player and two-time major champion Bryson DeChambeau, who heaped praise on Trump for 'protecting' the Ryder Cup.

'When the possibility of a strike threatened to disrupt transportation and attendance, President Trump stepped in and took the action needed to protect this world-class competition,' DeChambeau said.

'Thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership, the Ryder Cup experience will be everything fans and the golf community deserve.'

However, golf fans simply aren't buying it.

A number of them took to social media to both question Trump's boast and ridicule it, with many pointing out how the Ryder Cup has taken place every two years since its inception back in 1927.

One bluntly wrote on X: 'It would still be taking place.'

Another put sarcastically: 'He's being very modest. Because at the very same moment when he was saving the Ryder Cup, he ended two wars and drug prices dropped by 1100%. Amazing.'

'They offered to rename it the Trump Cup. But Trump, being the unassuming leader that he is, turned it down. He said him didn't want to make it about himself,' a third joked.

'The bootlicking is just out of control with these people,' said a fourth. 'Any semblance of dignity left the building a long time ago.'

While one quipped: 'Trump saved the Sun today. It would not have risen this morning without him.'

Trump, who will be in attendance for Friday's Ryder Cup session, is expected to delay his arrival in a move to ease fears about his planned visit to Bethpage Black.

One golf star who has a close relationship with him told Daily Mail Sport on Monday that he plans to be present ‘late morning’ on the opening day, but not for the first tee shots just after 7am.

That would come as a relief for Ryder Cup organizers who are concerned about a repeat of the chaos at this month's US Open tennis final, which was delayed by half an hour due to increased security measures at Flushing Meadows.
