TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Budi Gunawan, claimed that Rp6.7 trillion has been saved in the first three months of Prabowo's administration. These savings, he explained, come from various corruption cases handled by law enforcement through the Corruption Prevention and Governance Improvement Desk.
This special desk, established by the Coordinating Minister shortly after his inauguration, is led by the Attorney General and includes representatives from various ministries and institutions. They are the National Police, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Ministry of Communication and Digital, the Ministry of Immigration and Civil Registration, the Ministry of Law, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Investment Coordinating Board, the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, and the Presidential Communication Team.
The government also reported the recovery of gold assets worth Rp84 billion. “This amount does not include the results of seizures by the KPK and the Police's Anti-Corruption Task Force,” Budi said in his official statement on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Budi assured the public that all recovered funds and assets would be returned to the state. He emphasized that these seized items rightfully belonged to the state and were misappropriated by corrupt individuals.
“The government is not only committed to firmly act against the perpetrators of corruption but also to ensure that state assets misappropriated can be returned for the benefit of the public,” he added.
The former head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) also emphasized that the desk's work includes improving governance to prevent future corruption. “Improvements in governance and good governance are constantly being made to prevent them from becoming repeated loopholes for corruption,” he said.
However, the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has questioned the effectiveness of the Prabowo-Gibran administration's anti-corruption efforts in its first 100 days. ICW researcher Yassar suggested that the anti-corruption agenda faces significant challenges, citing a perceived decline in commitment to combating corruption. He pointed to statements made by President Prabowo and his officials as evidence.
Specifically, Yassar referenced a statement made by Prabowo during a meeting with Indonesian students in Cairo, Egypt, on December 18, 2024. According to Yassar, the Gerindra Party Chair stated that corruptors would be given the opportunity to "repent", provided they first repay the state losses incurred due to their corruption.
While this statement might appear commendable at first glance, Yassar argued, “But if we delve deeper, this statement clearly has no credible legal basis.”
ICW believes that the government's stated intention to offer leniency to corruptors is an attempt to manipulate the law, potentially leading to negative and concerning consequences. They consider the current state of anti-corruption efforts to be alarming.
