On a blustery, cold night at Anfield with rain drizzling down, two Real Madrid stars offered their jackets to shivering young mascots.

As Real Madrid and Liverpool lined up on the pitch for the Champions League anthem to be played, the mascots stood in front of them in shorts and t-shirts.

Most of the stars on show stood in their warm jackets and Liverpool's squad had hoodies to keep them protected from the bitter conditions.

But Arder Guler and Dean Huijsen showed some compassion and were seen draping their Real Madrid track tops over the grateful youngsters in front of them.

The temperature was around 12 degrees and rainfall constant at Anfield ahead of the big game so the Turkish international and former Bournemouth defender's kindness was at least appreciated by one of the mascots.

The child in front of Huijsen appeared to shrug off the jacket and insist he did not need it.

Dean Huijsen and Arder Guler put their jackets on chilly mascots at Anfield before the game

It was a cold drizzly night at Anfield for the game between Liverpool and Real Madrid

UEFA had the mascots dressed in black shorts and orange football shirts along with socks and trainers, which seemed extremely harsh in the cold weather.

Some children were at least given gloves, worn by one girl in the line-up who looked particularly chilly on Merseyside.

At least the mascots were soon able to get themselves warm and dry again as the game kick-off and temperatures rose on the pitch between two European heavyweights.

The atmosphere had cranked up a notch pre-game when Trent Alexander-Arnold had been booed onto the pitch in the warm-up.

The 27-year-old held his entrance back from the rest of the Spanish side, almost playing the pantomime villain, chatting to Liverpool members of staff just outside the tunnel.

He then grinned as he trotted onto the turf he spent so many years gracing but the Anfield crowd spotted him and immediately booed.

As he linked up with his Real team-mates, the right-back wore a broad smile and did not seem remotely bothered by the reception in the Merseyside rain on Tuesday night.

Alexander-Arnold was named by Xabi Alonso among the substitutes for the Champions League clash.
