A high school football coach in Mississippi is facing calls to be fired after appearing to shove a 17-year-old opponent and sparking a sideline brawl.

The incident occurred during a championship football game between Lamar School and Brookhaven Academy - held at Mississippi College's Robinson-Hale Stadium.

During the game, Lamar QB Sullivan Reed made a dash up the left-side before evading the defense and running into the Brookhaven sideline to secure a first down.

However, as he did so, one of the Brookhaven coaches extended his arm and pushed Reed over. The signal caller appeared to collide with a steel bench as he fell.

The 17-year-old quickly got back to his feet and, in retaliation, threw the ball towards the head of the coach. However he missed and instead hit a rival player.

That action sparked a brawl on the sidelines, with multiple Brookhaven coaches seen involved as the tensions spilled over during the title matchup.

Footage of the incident swiftly went viral and fans have started calling for the Brookhaven coach to be relieved of his duties following his role in the fracas.

Taking to X, one user wrote: 'This happened in a Mississippi private school championship game between Lamar and Brookhaven Academy today. If that's a coach, gotta be fired, right?'

Another said: 'People defending the coach need to see it's a shove, not a defensive 'hands and arms up' defense. Coaches don't shove kid players'.

Meanwhile, another wrote: 'Has he been fired yet? Shouldn't have taken this long'.

According to BroBible, Reed was the only ejected from the game, while the coach who shoved him was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

He remained on the sidelines for the rest of the game.

Despite losing their starting quarterback to the bizarre incident, Lamar still ran out 34-17 winners on the day and secured their seventh state title.

Neither school has addressed the matter as of yet.
