TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hong Kong’s Secretary for Health, Lo Chung-mau, said on Sunday, February 9, 2025, that the government will ban the possession and use of e-cigarette cartridges in public by mid-2026, as part of its push to clamp down on e-cigarettes.
"To protect our young people, we believe it is time to ban the use of e-cigarette cartridges," said Hong Kong’s top health official in a television program, as quoted from Channel News Asia.
“We will start by legislating against outdoor possession and use,” said Lo, adding that the government will expand the ban to indoor places once people start to get accustomed to the vape ban.
Lo said the policy will be submitted to the legislature in April this year with the goal of enforcing it in mid-2026.
The ban on public vaping is part of Hong Kong’s phased effort to reduce the smoking prevalence rate to 7.8 percent in 2025, after the ban on the import, sale, and manufacture of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products.
Meanwhile, citing the South China Morning Post, some business leaders have warned that the ban may discourage tourists and businesspeople from visiting Hong Kong.
