TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that causes respiratory tract infections, with symptoms similar to the common cold, such as cough, fever, and nasal congestion.

This virus can affect anyone, but children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems tend to be more susceptible to infections caused by HMPV.

Although the symptoms are similar to other respiratory diseases, HMPV has a fairly specific recovery time and generally takes between 1 to 2 weeks to heal.

Reported from the Apollo Hospital page, for most people infected with HMPV, the recovery process generally takes place in a relatively short period of time, usually around 1 to 2 weeks. During this period, most symptoms, such as cough and fever, tend to improve within a few days after the infection appears.

However, the main symptoms such as cough or fever can subside, some individuals may still feel fatigue or a mild cough that can last longer, even after the main symptoms have disappeared.

However, recovery from HMPV does not always go smoothly for everyone. High-risk groups, such as children under the age of 5, the elderly (senior citizens) aged 65 and over, and individuals with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems, may experience a longer recovery or even face complications.

Some people may experience more severe symptoms or even serious respiratory problems, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, which can prolong recovery time. In some cases, especially for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, HMPV infection can worsen their condition, requiring further medical attention.

Basically, the recovery process from HMPV depends greatly on the severity of the infection and the health condition of the infected individual. Those who are classified as high-risk groups should be more vigilant and seek medical care immediately if symptoms show signs of worsening.

In many cases, more intensive treatment or closer health monitoring may be needed to ensure that this infection does not develop into more serious complications.

To speed up recovery, it is highly recommended for those infected with HMPV to give their bodies time to rest. Adequate rest is essential to support the immune system in fighting infection. In addition, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids is also very important, as dehydration can worsen symptoms and slow the recovery process.

Supportive care, such as over-the-counter pain relievers or fever reducers, can help relieve symptoms while the body fights the infection, but medication use should always be supervised by a healthcare professional, especially for individuals with certain medical conditions.

If symptoms begin to worsen, such as shortness of breath, coughing up phlegm, or a fever that does not go away, it is important to consult a doctor or healthcare professional immediately. A healthcare provider may recommend further testing or provide additional treatment to prevent more serious complications, especially in vulnerable groups.

As a precaution, individuals infected with HMPV are advised to isolate themselves temporarily to avoid transmitting the virus to others, especially those in high-risk groups. In addition, maintaining personal hygiene by washing hands regularly and wearing a mask can help reduce the spread of the virus.

Overall, although HMPV tends not to cause fatal disease for most people, recovery time can vary depending on the individual's body condition. Those with strong immune systems usually recover quickly, while those who are more vulnerable may need more time and medical supervision.

By following proper care measures and maintaining general health, many people who are infected with HMPV can recover fully in a relatively short time.
