Indonesia Optimistic for 7.1 Percent Export Growth Despite U.S.-China Trade Tensions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government expressed optimism about achieving its 2025 national export target despite the ongoing trade war between the United States and China. Indonesia's export target for this year is set at US$294.45 billion, equivalent to Rp4,981.26 trillion based on an exchange rate of Rp16,917.17.

Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, Director General of International Trade Negotiation at the Trade Ministry, acknowledged the challenges in navigating the trade war. He noted that Indonesia is now also facing a 10 percent increase in import tariffs from the United States.

"Regarding the export target, the government and business players are working optimistically to respond to the situation, even though it is not easy. This is amidst difficult trade tensions and relatively pressured global economic conditions," Djatmiko told the media at Kemendag on Monday, April 21, 2025.

He stated that the government will continue its efforts to achieve this year's national export target. There are no plans to revise the previously established agreement concerning the targeted 7.1 percent export growth in 2025.

"We will continue to strive to achieve the set target. With the addition of new agreements, we hope that the target will be met. This also includes the agreements we currently have," Djatmiko said.

According to him, the government has established collaborative partnerships with several countries to bolster export growth. One example cited is the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA), which includes provisions for enhanced market access to expand opportunities for entering the Japanese market. Djatmiko expressed hope that this cooperation will serve as a significant driver of export performance.

Trade Minister Budi Santoso had previously set the 7.1 percent growth target, referencing Indonesia's export performance of US$241.25 billion in the preceding year. The ministry intends to intensify its efforts to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to contribute to this year's export growth target of US$294.45 billion.

Budi conveyed that these various targets are the result of export target calculations deemed necessary to achieve Indonesia's 8 percent economic growth target by 2029 during the 2025-2029 period.
