TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has captured a Malaysian-flagged fishing vessel suspected of illegal fishing in the waters of North Kalimantan.

The Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance of KKP, Pung Nugroho Saksono, said the vessel was apprehended to the east of Sebatik Island, North Kalimantan, on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time.

"The Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance Station (PSDKP) team in Tarakan stopped a Malaysian vessel, about seven miles inside the Indonesia-Malaysia border," he said in a written statement on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Pung mentioned that the capture of the Malaysian vessel was carried out following a resident report regarding the presence of foreign fishing vessels in Indonesian waters. The RIB-03 patrol speedboat fleet then headed to the location.

"The vessel was eventually disabled, following a hot pursuit,” he said.

Once captured, the vessel from Sabah, Malaysia, was proven to be lacking the required operating permits from the Indonesian government. Pung revealed that the vessel had caught around 60 kilograms of fish. On board were four Malaysian crew members, including the captain.

The Head of PSDKP Tarakan Station, Yoki Jiliansyah, added that the vessel named KM. TW 7329/6/F was operating fishing gear targeting grouper fish and red snapper. These fish species are known for their economic value, due to high market demand.

The Malaysian vessel crew would be charged with Article 92 Juncto Article 26 paragraph (1) of the Maritime and Fisheries Sector Law Number 6 of 2023 Juncto Fisheries Law Number 31 of 2004. Any person who intentionally conducts fisheries operations in the Indonesian Fisheries Management Area without the required operating permits may face a maximum of eight years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp1.5 billion.
