TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The China-based tech giant, Huawei, is seizing the opportunity as its competitor, Nvidia, faces difficulties in entering the domestic market. Referring to Tech Crunch on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Huawei announced its plan to develop the latest artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure to boost computation.
During the Huawei Connect conference in Shenzhen, Huawei introduced the SuperPoD Interconnect technology capable of connecting 15 thousand graphic processing units (GPUs), including their own smart chip, Ascend AI. In comparison, this SuperPoD is similar to NVLink—the super-fast communication lane between Nvidia-made chips.
Although Huawei's AI Ascend chip is still not as powerful as Nvidia's chip, its ability to cluster thousands of semiconductors enables Huawei to train large-scale AI. The Huawei press conference was held just a day after the Chinese government banned its domestic companies from purchasing Nvidia devices. The Bamboo Curtain's regulator shut the door, even for Nvidia's specially designed RTX Pro 600D server series for the Chinese market.
Since late August 2025, the Chinese government has urged local companies to reduce their reliance on Nvidia chips and shift to local products. This ban has hit the majority of China's technology ecosystem, which heavily relied on Nvidia products. Local players, including Huawei, have seized this opportunity.
During a press conference session, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang stated that his company could only serve a market in a country that wants Nvidia products. "I’m disappointed with what I see but they have larger agendas to work out between China and the United States."
