Immigrants in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt Advised to Stay Home at Night After Christmas Market Attack

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lamsa, an immigrant group in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, has advised foreign nationals in the region not to go out alone at night. The state of Saxony-Anhalt was the site of the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market on December 20, 2024, which injured 200 people.

The advice was given due to concerns over the attack carried out by Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, 50, a Saudi Arabian national, on people gathered at the Christmas market in Magdeburg by crashing his car. This incident killed five people, one of whom was a child.

"Lamsa has spoken to the Ministry of the Interior and the police to deploy more patrols on the streets on New Year's Eve," BILD reported on Monday, December 30, 2024.

BILD reported that the state of Saxony-Anhalt had received many reports of right-wing extremists. Several politicians and public figures have responded to the issue.

"Migrants are afraid of being targeted since the Christmas market incident and have not dared to leave their homes in recent days. We must prepare for new violence," said the bishop of the Evangelical Church for central Germany, Friedrich Kramer.

Eva von Angern, the leader of the Left Party in the German parliament for the region of Saxony-Anhalt, acknowledged the increasing threat of hostility and attacks. She also called on the people of Saxony-Anhalt to strengthen solidarity with migrants in Magdeburg and oppose any hostility. The politician also reminded that all migrants in Saxony-Anhalt should not be held responsible for the actions of a handful of people who break the law.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser gave a signal that the perpetrator of the deadly attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market on December 20, 2024, suffered from mental illness. Faeser said in a parliamentary committee meeting on Monday, December 30, 2024, that the motive for the attack was still uncertain. However, her party was aware that there were several quite striking signs of the perpetrator's mental pathology.

German media reported based on several sources, Abdulmohsen did have a history of mental illness and was suspected of testing positive for drugs when he attacked the Christmas market. A journalist who interviewed Abdulmohsen several years ago described Abdulmohsen as someone who often changed his mind. The perpetrator is currently being held by authorities.
