TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens have been injured in the massive demonstrations surrounding the general election in Tanzania.
According to a written statement posted on social media on Saturday, as quoted by Antara, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the Indonesian Embassy in Dar Es Salaam, continues to monitor developments in Tanzania and the safety of Indonesian citizens in the country.
"Based on information gathered, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens being killed," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
The Indonesian Embassy in Dar Es Salaam recorded 112 Indonesian citizens in Tanzania as of September 2025, spread across Dar Es Salaam and the Zanzibar region, the Ministry stated.
Given that the security situation has not yet fully recovered, Indonesian citizens in Tanzania are advised to remain vigilant, avoid crowds, and comply with all local government regulations and provisions.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urges Indonesian citizens in Tanzania to immediately contact the Indonesian Embassy in Dar Es Salaam at +255-78-60098701 in the event of an emergency.
Massive protests erupted in Tanzania ahead of Wednesday's presidential, National Assembly, and regional legislative elections, and continued as of this writing.
The protests stemmed from voter frustration over the lack of meaningful competition in the election, following the disqualification of the opposition presidential candidate. Local media reported that 700 Tanzanians had been killed in the three days of protests.
On Saturday, Tanzanian authorities announced that incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan had won the election, securing 97.66 percent of the vote.
Hassan has served as Tanzania's president since 2021, when she succeeded her predecessor, John Magufuli, who died in office.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed "deep concern" over the unrest in Tanzania.
Meanwhile, the African Union and the East African Community (EAC) called on Tanzanian authorities to ensure transparency in their handling of the post-election unrest.
