TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chair of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Yahya Zaini considers the proposal to ban vape, or electronic cigarettes, to be reasonable. According to him, the suggestion needs to be taken seriously.

Yahya believes that the ban on vape is not only aimed at preventing drug abuse, but also at protecting the health of the younger generation. He notes that young people often see the use of electronic cigarettes as a lifestyle choice.

"Banning vape can reduce unhealthy lifestyles, especially among young people," said Yahya in his written statement, quoted on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

He states that the increase in vape use among teenagers is often driven by the current lifestyle trends. The easy access to alternative options from conventional cigarettes due to digital platform advertising is also considered to have an influence.

Yahya believes that this situation makes the younger generation the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of vape. "The safety of the younger generation should be a priority," said the Golkar Party politician.

Furthermore, he advocates for strengthening regulations and supervision of the content of inhalation products widely available in society. The commission, which is responsible for health affairs among others, will oversee the discussion on the proposal to ban and strengthen regulations on vape use.

"The state must ensure that every product in circulation meets strict safety standards and can be verified so that the public is not harmed," said Yahya.

The proposal to ban vape was put forward by the National Narcotics Board (BNN). This proposal emerged following the discovery of the misuse of vape liquid as a medium for drug consumption.

Based on laboratory test results conducted by the BNN on hundreds of electronic cigarette samples, illegal substances such as cannabinoids, methamphetamine, and etomidate were found. Yahya also mentioned that data on research into the content of vape has been obtained.

He stated that the vapor produced by vape, or electronic cigarettes, often contains toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and dangerous compounds that can trigger various health disorders in users. He added that these health issues can damage the lungs, heart, and even mental health such as depression or anxiety.
