TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that there were no Indonesian citizens on the passenger list of the Azerbaijan Airlines J2-8243 plane that crashed on Wednesday, December 25, 2024. As many as 38 people were killed in the incident, and 28 other people survived.
“No information thus far about Indonesian passengers onboard the Azerbaijan Airline that crashed in Kazakhstan,” said Director of Citizen Protection Judha Nugraha on Wednesday night, December 25, 2024.
The Embraer-type passenger jet with flight number J2-8243 was flying from Azerbaijan to Russia. But before it reached its destination, it crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, December 25.
At the time of the incident, the plane was carrying 62 passengers and five crew members on board. Kazakh authorities announced that 38 passengers died while 28 others were found safe.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who was attending a summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, returned home immediately after hearing about the crash. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the Azerbaijani government.
“We deeply sympathize with those who lost their relatives and friends in this plane crash and wish a speedy recovery to all those who managed to survive.”
Azerbaijan Airlines Flight J2-8243 had flown hundreds of miles off its scheduled route from Azerbaijan to Russia and crashed on the opposite coast of the Caspian Sea. Russia's aviation watchdog called the crash an emergency that may have been caused by a bird. However, an aviation expert said collision with birds was unlikely to make the plane “fly wildly off course.”
Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev said according to information he had received, the plane changed course due to poor weather, but he added the cause of the crash was unknown and must be fully investigated.
“This is a great tragedy that has become a tremendous sorrow for the Azerbaijani people,” he said.
Video of the crash showed the plane descending rapidly before bursting into flames as it hit the seashore, and thick black smoke then rose. Bloodied and bruised passengers could be seen stumbling from a piece of the fuselage that had remained intact.
