TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed in a post on X that Indonesia rejects any forced relocation of Palestinian residents or attempts to alter the demographic makeup of the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This is because Indonesia believes that such actions would obstruct the establishment of an independent and sovereign state of Palestine, as envisioned by the Two-State Solution based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
"Indonesia calls on the international community to ensure respect for international law, particularly the right to self-determination of the Palestinians as well as their inalienable right to return to their homeland," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in the post on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
Indonesia reemphasizes that the only genuine path to achieving lasting peace in the region lies in addressing the core issues of the conflict, specifically the prolonged and illegal occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump caused a stir on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, as he suggested taking control of the Gaza Strip, relocating Palestinian residents, and developing the area economically.
Trump did not provide details about his plan, which he announced alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the latter's working visit to the United States. The announcement followed Trump's suggestion on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, to permanently resettle Palestinian residents from Gaza to neighboring countries, referring to the enclave as a demolition site.
"We’ll own it and will be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site. We're going to develop it, create thousands and thousands of jobs, and it'll be something that the entire Middle East can be very proud of," Trump stated.
When asked about who would reside in the area, Trump suggested it could become home to people from all over the world, predicting it could become a "Riviera" in the Middle East. Riviera in Italian means coastline or coastal area.
