Indonesia Has Strong Grounds for Denying Visas to Israeli Gymnastics Team, Says Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said the government had strong grounds for canceling the visas of the Israeli gymnastics team, which had planned to compete in the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Jakarta from October 19–25.

Erick explained that the decision was made to uphold public order and security, in line with Indonesia’s constitutional values and its foreign policy stance aimed at supporting world peace.

“This step (the visa cancellation) is consistent with existing laws and regulations,” Erick said in Jakarta on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

“It is also rooted in the 1945 Constitution, which upholds public order and reflects Indonesia’s responsibility to help maintain world order.”

His statement came in response to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which urged international sports federations to avoid hosting events in Indonesia following the government’s decision to bar the Israeli delegation.

Erick acknowledged that the policy carries diplomatic and sporting consequences.

“As long as Indonesia cannot accept Israel’s presence, the IOC has decided that Indonesia cannot host world championships, the Olympics, Youth Olympic Games, or other Olympic-affiliated events,” he said.

Despite this, Erick affirmed that the Indonesian government remains committed to strengthening national sports development.

The ministry continues to implement a long-term blueprint focusing on 17 priority sports and the establishment of national training centers.

He added that Indonesia would continue to participate actively in international sporting events, from the Southeast Asian and Asian Games to world-level competitions, positioning Indonesian athletes as ambassadors of national pride and excellence on the global stage.
