TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia is seeking to expand bilateral trade ties with countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe, said the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir. He said the move is intended to open new opportunities in non-traditional markets.

"One example of the non-traditional markets that we always seek are those in the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. We are always open (to these markets), as we see the potential,” said the deputy minister while attending the 70th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Vietnam at the Raffles Hotel Jakarta on Monday, February 24, 2025.

Arrmanatha mentioned that Indonesia's current bilateral trade is dominated by deals with China, the United States, and several European countries.

Indonesia must seek other markets amidst the global uncertainties, he said, adding that the country must strengthen its position within traditional markets like China, Southeast Asia, the U.S., and Europe.

During the anniversary celebration, the deputy minister also revealed that Indonesia and Vietnam are targeting US$18 billion of trade turnover by 2028. “But considering the trends, I’m confident we can reach the target before 2028," he said.

According to Arrmanatha, the good relations between the two countries invite confidence for the target. In 2024, Indonesia and Vietnam recorded US$16 billion of bilateral trade volumes, equal to about Rp260.4 trillion.
