TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of Indonesia, through the Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Political, and Security Affairs, and the Malaysian authorities plan to establish as many as nine border points. This is done to resolve and strengthen the immigration system of both parties.

"I will convey to the Indonesian authorities who are handling the border point negotiations between Indonesia and Malaysia on several points, especially in Kalimantan Island," said Yusril in a press conference at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Political, and Security Affairs in South Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.

Yusril stated that the negotiations regarding the border points have been conducted well and without crucial problems. He is optimistic that both parties can realize the negotiations regarding these border points.

The Minister of Home Affairs Malaysia, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, explained the locations of the nine border points. He stated that the border points to enter Indonesia are located in Kalimantan, while to enter Malaysia one must go through the border points in Sabah and Sarawak. "There are nine locations agreed upon in the agreement, and once the agreement is reached, the next step is the development of the areas at the entry points," said Saifuddin.

To realize this agreement, Saifuddin said the government still needs to follow up on the three legal collaborations between Indonesia and Malaysia. One form of this cooperation includes the repatriation of Indonesian convicts in Malaysia and vice versa; immigration cooperation including the resolution of immigrants who violate immigration laws such as not having immigration documents, abusing Border Crossing Travel Documents, and Indonesian citizens who exceed the maximum residence permit; and the third is the establishment of the border points between Indonesia and Malaysia.

"The things we've made a checklist of, as a basic agreement, will then be followed up with discussions or meetings at the officials' level regarding these three things," said Saifuddin.

Saifudin stated that the visit he made with Coordinating Minister Yusril was a follow-up to these three matters, as well as continuing the state visit meetings between President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur some time ago. "I consider this bilateral meeting very successful, very productive," he said.
