TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), AI-based research is being developed to support accessibility, particularly through speech and facial expression recognition technologies designed to assist people with disabilities.
Hilman Ferdinandus Pardede, Principal Researcher at BRIN’s Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security Research Center, said that speech recognition technology enables more natural and efficient communication for individuals with disabilities.
“Speech recognition makes communication more natural and humane. There’s no need to touch or see, just use your voice,” Hilman said in a written statement on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Hilman noted, however, that speech recognition research still faces major technical challenges, including adaptation to diverse accents, environmental noise, and varied user conditions.
“Efficient and resource-saving innovations are crucial for this technology to reach more people, especially those using simple devices. This is how AI can truly promote equal access to technology,” he added.
Meanwhile, Senior Engineer Gembong Satrio Wibowanto explained that BRIN is also developing facial expression recognition systems as an alternative means of communication for individuals with verbal limitations.
“Our research focuses on creating adaptive, real-time systems capable of interpreting facial expressions accurately. This technology is expected to detect emotions more precisely, making human–machine interactions more empathetic and intuitive,” Gembong said.
The Head of BRIN’s Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security Research Center, Anto Satriyo Nugroho, emphasized that technology should be inclusive and accessible to everyone. He said AI has the potential to power innovations that improve the daily lives of people with disabilities.
“For instance, screen readers can assist those with visual impairments, while speech recognition tools can support individuals with hearing difficulties,” Anto said.
Rachmita Maun Harahap, a Commissioner at the Indonesia's National Disability Commission, underscored the importance of embedding a rights-based approach in technology development.
She said that technology should not merely be seen as an act of compassion but as a tool to promote equality and empowerment.
She acknowledged that AI innovations such as speech-to-text and text-to-speech systems have already made a tangible difference for people with visual and hearing impairments.
“These technologies not only enhance communication but also open new opportunities in education and employment,” Rachmita said.
