TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the early stages of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, Indonesia’s Democracy Index has declined once again. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a London-based research and analysis organization, recorded Indonesia’s democracy score at 6.44 in 2024, placing the country Indonesia in the "flawed democracy" category. The country dropped three ranks from 56th in the previous year to 59th in 2024 out of 167 nations surveyed.
Indonesia’s democracy score had already declined in 2023, falling to 6.5 from 6.71 in 2022. This marks three consecutive years in the flawed democracy category.
According to EIU’s research, the index is measured based on electoral processes and pluralism, government functioning, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties.
“In 2024, the largest declines were recorded in government functioning and electoral processes and pluralism,” EIU stated in its report Tempo received on Wednesday, March 5.
EIU noted that Indonesia is among the world’s most populous countries to hold elections, alongside Bangladesh, Brazil, Russia, India, Pakistan, Mexico, and the United States. In 2024, Indonesia held its largest-ever electoral event, conducting presidential, legislative, and regional elections simultaneously.
Former President Suharto’s son-in-law, Prabowo Subianto, won the presidential election, with Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of President Joko Widodo, as vice president.
Prabowo and Gibran started their administration by forming an extensive "Red and White Cabinet," consisting of 48 ministries—seven coordinating ministries and 41 technical ministries. In total, Prabowo appointed 48 ministers and 58 deputy ministers to his cabinet.
