TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, said the Paris Agreement is no longer a mutual commitment between countries, as the initiators have pulled out from the global deal to reduce carbon emissions.
"The world is now out of kilter. The commitment of the Paris Agreement towards energy transition is no longer mutual, with some countries that have pioneered the deal withdrawing," said Bahlil during the ratification of the Electricity Supply Business Plan of PT PLN for the 2025-2034 period at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources office, Jakarta, Monday, May 26, 2025.
Nevertheless, he said, Indonesia remains committed to the Paris climate deal, but he admitted that such commitment must take into account capability, energy availability, and the economy.
"Governing a country is unlike writing papers for a seminar," said the former Minister of Investment.
According to Bahlil, the geopolitical context influences the government's efforts to transition from fossil energy to new and renewable energy.
The global consensus on net zero emissions, he said, has now shifted, influenced by those who have initiated the Paris Agreement.
Among such countries is the United States, which withdrew from the climate deal immediately upon Trump's return to the White House.
"At the beginning, we were following in their steps. But now even the U.S. refuses to implement the deal properly. May I, as the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, ask what's behind this?" said the minister, referring to the U.S.' departure from the commitment.
Additionally, Bahlil revealed that the countries most vocal about new and renewable energy still insist on new coal contracts in Indonesia.
"Well, if they're still using coal, why are they forcing us to stop using coal," he said.
