Indonesia's Foreign Ministry Dispatches 124 Tons of Aid for Myanmar Earthquake Victims

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has officially dispatched 124 tons of humanitarian aid valued at US$1.2 million to assist the victims of the earthquake in Myanmar.

The aid, which includes refugee tents, medical supplies, and medicines, was sent today following extensive coordination at both the national and ASEAN regional levels.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the powerful earthquake, which struck Myanmar on March 28, has caused a devastating loss of life.

"According to the latest data, the death toll has reached 2,886, with 4,639 people injured, and around 300 still missing," the Foreign Minister said in a press release.

The situation in Myanmar is becoming more complex considering the unstable security and political conditions in the country following the 2021 military coup.

Nevertheless, the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon has confirmed that there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens becoming victims of the disaster until now.

The aid shipment is carried out after a series of emergency coordination. Since March 28, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been coordinating with the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture to prepare the aid.

In parallel, ASEAN foreign ministers also held an emergency meeting to coordinate humanitarian assistance measures.

"Under the direct orders of President Prabowo Subianto, we immediately prepared this aid by adjusting to the most urgent needs in the field, namely refugee tents and medical equipment," Sugiono said.

The distribution process of the aid in Myanmar itself faces its own challenges given the unstable political situation. The Indonesian government ensures that the aid will be channeled through ASEAN mechanisms and trusted local humanitarian partners.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that Indonesia will continue to monitor the situation and is ready to provide further support if needed.

This aid shipment once again reaffirms Indonesia's position as an active country in assisting fellow ASEAN member states affected by disasters, while also strengthening humanitarian solidarity in the region.
