Indonesia's Mount Semeru Erupts, Spewing Ash 1,200 Meters High

1 day ago 16

TEMPO.CO, Lumajang - Mount Semeru, a volcano in Indonesia’s East Java Province, erupted again on Friday morning, March 7, 2025, releasing volcanic ash up to approximately 1,200 meters above its peak, or about 4,876 meters above sea level. The eruption produced a white to gray ash column of moderate intensity, drifting northward.

"An eruption of Mount Semeru occurred on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 04:34 a.m. West Indonesia Time, with an observed ash column reaching around 1,200 meters above the summit," reported Liswanto, an officer at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA).

Since Thursday night, Semeru has erupted at least three times. The first eruption, at 11:39 p.m. local time, sent ash 1,000 meters above the peak. The second eruption, at 00:39 a.m. on Friday, produced an ash column rising 1,100 meters.

Seismic activity recorded at the PGA Semeru post indicated significant volcanic movement, including 67 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-23 mm lasting between 50-291 seconds, 12 emission quakes, one harmonic tremor, and five distant tectonic quakes.

With Mount Semeru’s activity status at Level II (Advisory), the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) has advised residents to avoid all activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 8 kilometers of the peak, where the eruption is centered. Beyond this radius, residents should maintain a distance of at least 500 meters from riverbanks, as pyroclastic flows and lahars could extend up to 13 kilometers from the summit.

Additionally, PVMBG warns against entering a 3-kilometer radius around Semeru’s crater due to the risk of ejected incandescent rocks. Communities are urged to remain alert for potential pyroclastic surges, lava flows, and lahars, particularly along the Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat rivers, as well as smaller tributaries connected to Besuk Kobokan.
