Indonesia Set to Join BRICS-Led New Development Bank

2 days ago 24

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has stated Indonesia's intention to swiftly join the New Development Bank (NDB), a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).

"This was conveyed when the President of the New Development Bank, Dilma Rousseff, visited Indonesia," Airlangga said at Graha Sawala on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

President Prabowo Subianto first announced Indonesia's official decision to join the NDB on March 25, 2025. "The Indonesian government has decided to join the New Development Bank," he said at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, on May 25, 2025.

Prabowo explained that this decision followed an offer from the NDB President Dilma Rousseff and extensive discussions with the NDB team and relevant ministries. The government's financial team, comprising Foreign Minister Sugiono, Investment and Industrial Estate Minister Rosan Roeslani, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, was involved in the deliberations.

"After an examination by the Finance Minister and our discussions, I have decided to join the New Development Bank and follow the procedures and requests that have been given to us," Prabowo affirmed.

He further detailed that the NDB, established by BRICS member countries in July 2014, aims to finance sustainable development projects and promote the economies of developing nations. Its headquarters are in Shanghai, China, with several regional centers, including one in Africa. The NDB began with an initial capital of US$100 billion contributed by its founding members.
