TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy is set to conduct a test firing of its homegrown unmanned submarine during the last week of October 2025. Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said the test-firing will take place at Navy Base II in Surabaya, East Java.
"Next week, we will conduct a test firing of the autonomous submarine," Sjafrie said at the Ministry of Defense office on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Sjafrie lauded the occasion, calling it a symbol of pride not only for the military, but for the Indonesian people. According to him, there are not many countries in the world that produce autonomous submarines as part of their main defense system.
"We are the fourth country in the world to manufacture autonomous submarines, and we have developed them domestically," said the former Commander of the Jakarta Raya Regional Military Command.
The autonomous unmanned submarine made its first appearance in the 80th Anniversary Parade of the Indonesian National Armed Forces on October 5, 2025. The autonomous submarine was displayed alongside other TNI defense systems.
The domestically produced submarine bears the hull number identity KSOT-008 with the PT PAL logo. TNI Chief of Information Center Major General Freddy Ardianzah said the autonomous underwater vehicle is among the new equipment displayed during the parade.
Freddy explained that the appearance of KSOT-008 and several new weaponries owned by TNI reflects the successful implementation of the national defense modernization program. Other countries possessing unmanned submarines include China and Australia.
