TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has approved the repatriation request of two British inmates, Lindsay June Sandiford and Shahab Shahabadi. The Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendr, stated that both convicts were involved in drug cases.

"One was on death row, the other was sentenced to life imprisonment," said Yusril on Tuesday, October 31, 2025, adding that the two are expected to be returned to the UK in the near future.

Lindsay June Sandiford has served her sentence at the Class IIA Kerobokan Prison in Bali. She has been detained for about 13 years since May 25, 2012.

Lindsay, said Yusril, is suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and severe hypertension. "She's already 68 years old," he added.

Meanwhile, Shahab Shahabadi is being repatriated along with Lindsay due to skin diseases and mental health issues. "It's quite difficult to handle in a prison," Yusril told reporters.

Shahab was imprisoned at the Class IIA Kembangkuning Prison in Nusa Kambangan. He was first detained on June 26, 2014, and has been serving his sentence for about 11 years.

Yusril said the repatriation deal with the British government would be reciprocal. "If there are Indonesian convicts sentenced in the UK, we can also request that they be returned to Indonesia," said Yusril.

But the Indonesian government has not yet considered repatriating any citizen serving prison sentences in the UK. "There has been no decision from the government to request that Indonesian citizens detained in the UK also be returned," said Yusril.

Indonesia earlier approved the repatriation of two convicts from the Netherlands, Siegfried Mets (73 years old) and Ali Tokman (64 years old).
