TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and Spain met to discuss strengthening cultural cooperation between the two countries and affirmed support for the protection of Palestinian culture during a bilateral meeting in Madrid, Spain.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon and Spanish Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun, on the sidelines of the International Conference on the Reconstruction of the Cultural Sector in Palestine, discussed the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the cultural sector as a foundation for developing various cooperation programs, particularly in the film sector.
"We propose facilitating co-production schemes for filmmakers from both countries. Furthermore, we can develop a matching fund scheme to support filmmakers," said Fadli Zon in a press release confirmed in Jakarta on Thursday.
According to Fadli Zon, the Indonesian film industry currently produces more than 250 films annually, providing capital to expand joint productions and strengthen the creative industry network between the two countries.
Fadli Zon emphasized Indonesia's commitment to continuing to strengthen bilateral relations with Spain through cultural diplomacy. According to him, cooperation between the two countries can be further developed through the establishment of cultural centers, strengthening collaboration in the field of cultural heritage, and developing a sustainable joint agenda.
In response to this proposal, Spanish Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun expressed his support and called for increased participation of Indonesian films in various international film festivals in Spain, including the San Sebastián Film Festival and the Málaga Film Festival.
Support for the Protection of Palestinian Culture
The ministerial meeting also discussed support for the formation of the International Alliance for the Protection of Palestinian Culture as part of the commitment to protect Palestinian identity and cultural heritage.
Fadli Zon extended his appreciation for the initiative, stating, "Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world. However, this is not the only factor; support for the Palestinian cause comes from the government, parliament, and the Indonesian people at large," said Fadli Zon.
UNESCO is developing several programs to support the protection of Palestinian culture. In addition, the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), along with the Arab League, is also implementing various initiatives to synergize international efforts to safeguard Palestinian cultural heritage.
"We have a strong commitment to supporting Palestine. Together with UNESCO, we have made significant efforts to support culture in Ukraine, and we believe that similar efforts are necessary for Palestine," Urtasun said.
