TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Roy Soemirat, has reaffirmed Indonesia's continued commitment to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Indonesia remains the largest troop contributor to UNIFIL, with a deployment of 1,230 personnel. Besides, the UN also continues to maintain a peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

“Indonesian peacekeeping forces continue to fulfill their duties as directed by the UNIFIL Force Commander while prioritizing their safety and security. They are currently in good health,” Roy said in a written statement on Friday, November 22, 2024.

Furthermore, Roy mentioned that Indonesia is actively communicating and coordinating with various parties to ensure the safety and security of its personnel in Lebanon.

As previously reported, two Indonesian Military (TNI) soldiers serving with UNIFIL were shot by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in southern Lebanon on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

According to Major General Hariyanto, Head of the Indonesian Military (TNI) Information Center, the incident occurred at the Naquora Observation Tower during a shootout between the IDF and Hezbollah.

Naquora is one of the posts guarded by Indonesian military personnel. Unfortunately, two soldiers were struck by stray bullets fired by the Israeli military. The bullets hit the observation tower where the soldiers were stationed.

UNIFIL condemned the attack, stating that any assault on peacekeeping forces is a grave violation of international humanitarian law. The peacekeeping organization, comprising approximately 10,000 troops from 50 countries and established in 1978, reported that Israeli forces intentionally targeted their positions along the border.

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti described the attack as a very serious and concerning development. Israel had previously requested that peacekeeping forces relocate from certain positions near the border.

“But we decided to stay because it’s important for the UN flag to fly in [the] south of Lebanon,” Tenenti explained.

“If the situation becomes impossible for the mission to operate in the south of Lebanon … it will be up to the Security Council to decide how to move forward,” he added. “At the moment, we are staying, we are trying to do whatever we can to monitor [and] to provide assistance.”
