TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team suffered a heavy defeat against Japan in the final match of the third round of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers. Taking place at Suita City Stadium in Osaka on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the game ended 0-6 for the Blue Samurai squad.
Japan's victory solidified their crown atop the Group C standings with 23 points from 10 matches, with seven wins and two draws. Meanwhile, Indonesia remains in fourth place with 12 points, resulting from three wins and three draws.
Match Overview
Indonesian national team coach Patrick Kluivert made several changes to the starting lineup. He maintained the 3-4-3 formation, with Emil Audero Mulyadi as the goalkeeper and Mees Hilgers, Jay Idzes, and Justin Hubner as the three defenders.
On the wings, Kevin Diks and Dean James flanked Thom Haye and Joey Pelupessy as midfielders. They supported the trio of Beckham Putra Nugraha, Ole Romeny, and Yance Sayuri.
Japanese coach Hajime Moriyasu fielded Keisuke Osako as the goalkeeper, who was guarded by defenders Kota Takai, Ryoya Morishita, and Ayumu Seko. In the midfield, Wataru Endo was the leader, supported by Kaishu Sano, Takefusa Kubo, Shunsuke Mito, and Daichi Kamada to break through the Garuda squad's defense. They assisted the two forwards, Shuto Machino and Junnosuke Suzuki.
First Half
Japan immediately pressured Indonesia's defense from the get-go, but it wasn't until the 10th minute that Shuto Machino had a clear chance, capitalizing on a pass from Daichi Kamada, but his header still went over Audero's goal.
Japan broke the deadlock in the 15th minute through Kamada. Throughout the first 15 minutes, Japan dominated possession with 83 percent, while Indonesia only had 17 percent of the ball.
Takefusa Kubo doubled Japan's lead in the 18th minute with a corner kick. Indonesia tried to break free from Japan's pressure after 30 minutes of play. Both teams engaged in a midfield duel, with Japan almost scoring another goal 40 minutes into the game.
Kamada scored his second goal in the 45+6th minute, after a breakthrough pass from Kubo allowed him to deceive three defensive players before scoring into Indonesia's goal. Japan led 3-0 in the first half.
Second Half
Patrick Kluivert substituted Beckham Putra with Ricky Kambuaya after the break. On the Japanese side, Hajime Moriyasu also replaced Kamada with Keito Nakamura.
The changes didn't alter the course of the game. Japan continued to dominate.
In the 55th minute, Ryoya Morishita scored Japan's fourth goal. Three minutes later, Machino scored a goal after receiving a breakthrough pass from Kubo inside the penalty area. The score was 5-0 in favor of Japan.
Seeing his players struggle, Kluivert made two substitutions an hour into the away game. He brought in Stefano Lilipaly and Shayne Pattynama to replace James and Pelupessy. Japan also rotated their players, with Mito, Kubo, and Morishita being replaced by Kodai Sano, Ryunosuke Sato, and Mao Hasoya.
Indonesia continued to struggle against Japan's tight and fast gameplay. In the 80th minute, Indonesia conceded again, with a goal from Hosoya.
Japan ended the final match for the third round of World Cup qualifiers with a 6-0 score and 71 percent of ball possession.
