TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government strongly condemns the attack that killed a member of the Garuda Contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), urging a "thorough and transparent investigation" into the incident.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in a statement that the Indonesian peacekeeper was killed by indirect artillery fire in the vicinity of the Indonesian UNIFIL contingent’s position near Adshit Al Qusayr, southern Lebanon, on Sunday, March 29, 2026, local time.
“Indonesia strongly condemns the incident and calls for a thorough and transparent investigation,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in a written statement on Monday, as quoted from Antara.
Indonesia also confirms that three other peacekeepers were injured in the incident, which occurred amid increased hostilities between Israel and armed groups in southern Lebanon.
Indonesia does not identify the source of the shelling, but according to Anadolu, citing Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA), Israeli artillery shelling targeted the headquarters of the Garuda Contingent in Adshit Al Qusayr.
Meanwhile, UNIFIL in a statement on X says it does not know the origin of the projectile. "We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances," says the UN agency on Monday.
The Indonesian government says it is working with UNIFIL to ensure "the prompt repatriation of the fallen" as well as "the best possible medical treatment for the injured."
“We pay our highest respect to the fallen peacekeeper for his dedication and service to international peace and security,” the statement reads.
Indonesia once again reaffirms its condemnation of Israel’s attacks on southern Lebanon and calls on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and cease attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Indonesia also calls for the safety and security of UN peacekeepers to be respected in accordance with international law.
“Any harm to peacekeepers is unacceptable and undermines collective efforts to maintain peace and stability,” it adds.
Indonesia also remains in close coordination with the UN and relevant authorities and is closely monitoring developments.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, 2026. Tehran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes against Israel and several U.S. military bases in the region.
The conflict spread to Lebanon after Hezbollah launched attacks on several military targets in Israel.
Israel’s subsequent attacks on Lebanon have killed over 1,000 Lebanese civilians and injured thousands more.
Incidents along the Israel-Lebanon border also killed several UNIFIL personnel from various countries.
