The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Tammy Bruce, stated in a release on Thursday, April 17, 2025, that Sugiono and Rubio affirmed the importance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the United States and Indonesia. Bruce also revealed the joint agreement to promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific.
"They discussed ways to deepen defense and security cooperation, including efforts to uphold freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea in accordance with international law," said Bruce, quoted from the official statement of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta.
Furthermore, Bruce said that Rubio and Sugiono also discussed reciprocal U.S. tariffs on Indonesia. Bruce clarified that Rubio welcomed Indonesia's efforts to reform the economy towards fair and balanced trade relations.
