Indonesian Influencer Sentenced to 7 Years by Myanmar Junta Over Rebel Group Ties

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian citizen, identified by the initials AP, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a Myanmar court operating under the control of the country’s military junta. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that AP was arrested by local authorities on December 20, 2024.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Ministry said AP was accused of entering Myanmar illegally and meeting with an armed group designated by the local government as a prohibited organization.

AP has been charged under several laws, including the Anti-Terrorism Law, the 1947 Immigration Law, and Section 17(2) of the Unlawful Associations Act. He is currently being held at Insein Prison in Yangon, a high-security facility managed by the junta.

Ongoing Assistance Since Arrest

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that legal protection for AP has been in place since the day of his arrest. These efforts have been coordinated through the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon. According to Judha Nugraha, Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry, the embassy has taken multiple steps to assist.

“The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon has sent diplomatic notes, provided consular access, offered direct assistance during the investigation, ensured legal representation, and maintained communication between AP and his family,” Judha said in a written statement received on Tuesday evening.

The seven-year sentence followed a trial conducted under the judiciary overseen by the Myanmar military. After the court's ruling became final, the Ministry and the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon supported a clemency request filed by AP’s family.

Non-legal efforts are also being pursued, and the Ministry continues to monitor AP’s well-being in prison. “We will keep monitoring his condition during the course of his sentence,” Judha added.

Case Highlights Instagram Personality

Public attention on the case grew after Abraham Sridjaja, a member of Commission I in the Indonesian House of Representatives, revealed AP's detention during a parliamentary meeting with the Ministry on June 30, 2025.

“One of our citizens is currently detained in Myanmar,” said Abraham. He further identified AP as an Instagram influencer who is suspected of providing financial support to rebel groups in the country.

“He is currently detained on immigration charges. I hope efforts can be made to pursue a pardon or deportation, considering he is accused of funding Myanmar rebels,” Abraham said. He encouraged the government to take diplomatic action to help AP return to Indonesia.
