TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono urged a thorough investigation into the shooting of five Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in Malaysia on January 24, 2025. Sugiono supports the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) being investigated for suspected excessive use of force against the five PMI.

"I urge a thorough investigation into the shooting incident carried out by (APMM), including the alleged excessive use of force," Sugiono said on Monday, January 27, 2025 in his statement. Sugiono regretted the loss of life in the shooting incident.

He also expressed his condolences for the death of an Indonesian citizen (WNI). According to the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the victim who died had the initials B, from Riau Province. "I express my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim and also to the other victims who were injured," said Sugiono.

B's body can only be repatriated after the autopsy process is complete. The Indonesian Embassy will carry out all procedures for handling the body, as well as facilitate repatriation to the area of origin. Meanwhile, for the other 4 migrant workers who were injured, the Indonesian Embassy received information that they had received treatment at the hospital and were currently in stable condition. The Indonesian Embassy had received consular access to meet them on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

Previously, on January 24, 2025, at around 03.00 am local time, APMM shot at a boat in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor while on patrol. The shooting was carried out after the boat passengers allegedly resisted. This incident resulted in one Indonesian citizen dying and four others being injured.

In response to this incident, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur immediately took steps to ensure protection for the affected Indonesian citizens and sent a diplomatic note to Malaysia to encourage a thorough investigation, including highlighting the possibility of excessive use of force.

The Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) strongly condemns the shooting case by APMM. According to Deputy Minister of P2MI Christina Aryani, APMM used excessive force in handling Indonesian migrant workers.

"The Ministry of P2MI urges the Malaysian government to immediately investigate this incident and take firm action against APMM patrol officers if they are proven to have committed acts involving excessive use of force," said Deputy Minister of P2MI Christina Aryani, Sunday, January 26, 2025, as quoted by Antara.

Aryani said her ministry continues to coordinate to ensure that injured victims receive medical treatment. In addition, KP2MI also provides support to the families of the victims, including legal assistance and repatriation of bodies.
