TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian women's singles player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung secured a victory in the first round of the 2025 Asia Badminton Championship. She advanced after defeating Taiwan's representative Huang Yu-Hsun on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
Playing at Ningbo Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, China, Gregoria won two straight games against Huang with scores of 21-12, 21-16 with a duration of 31 minutes. In the first game, Gregoria managed to secure the first four points, leaving her opponent behind. She then maintained a lead until the interval with a score of 11-5. After that, the BWF world rank 3 managed to maintain her advantage and finished with a score of 21-12.
In the second game, Gregoria and her opponent shared points in a fierce match until the interval. She only managed to leave her opponent behind when she reached a score of 14-13, then advanced to 19-13 and closed the match 21-16.
After the match, Gregoria expressed her gratitude for being able to start the competition with a positive result. "In the beginning, I played quite cleanly, and that's something good to start the tournament," she said.
In the next match, she hopes to play consistently and understand the court conditions better. Gregoria admitted to facing quite some difficulty in the second game. "I noticed that in the first game, my opponent often hit the shuttlecock to the back, which made me a bit hesitant to lift the shuttlecock in the second game, but ironically, her returns were weak and she was easy to attack me," she said.
Gregoria realized that she felt less comfortable during long rallies. However, she stated that her coach reminded her to dare to compete in rallies in the first game. "From there, I managed to get a streak point and reduce my own mistakes," she said.
