TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japanese oil and gas company Inpex Corp. believes its US$21 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in eastern Indonesia has the potential to become one of Asia's largest LNG producers and secure future supplies.
Inpex CEO Takayuki Ueda described the Abadi LNG Project in Masela Block as crucial, with the potential to contribute to energy security in Japan and the entire Indo-Pacific region.
The Abadi Masela groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday, July 16, in the Tanimbar Islands, Maluku, and witnessed virtually by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto from Jakarta.
Inpex, which holds a 65 percent stake in the project, is collaborating with Indonesian state-owned energy giant Pertamina and Malaysian energy company Petronas to build the offshore facility in the Arafura Sea.
The Abadi LNG Project is expected to begin commercial production in 2029 and is designed to have a production capacity of 9.5 million metric tons of LNG per year and supply 150 million cubic feet of pipeline gas per day to the Indonesian domestic market.
According to the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the project, which has been delayed for nearly three decades since its contract signing in 1998, will integrate carbon capture and storage technology to achieve a society with net-zero carbon emissions.
President Prabowo described the project as an effort to strengthen Indonesia's national energy independence and as a driving force for Indonesia's progress.
