TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called for ministers and heads of agencies to use Maung vehicles produced by PT Pindad as official state cars. The request was made by Prabowo during a full cabinet meeting at the State Palace on October 20, 2025.
Prabowo also mentioned that Indonesia will have a national car in the next three years. He stated that funds have already been allocated to prepare the factory. "We have already produced Indonesian-made jeeps," said Prabowo during a cabinet meeting in his first year of governance.
Prabowo stated that Indonesian officials and military officers will take pride in using domestically produced jeeps. Especially now, the TNI (Indonesian Military) battalion commanders are already using Indonesian-made Maung vehicles when leading their troops.
However, Prabowo stated that he must set an example for his subordinates by always using Maung vehicles produced by PT Pindad.
When inaugurated last October, Prabowo rode in a white Pindad MV-3 Garuda Limousine from the DPR/MPR RI (Indonesian House of Representatives/People's Consultative Assembly) building to the Presidential Palace. After the inauguration, Prabowo often uses Maung vehicles as his official state vehicle.
He also planned for officials from ministers, deputy ministers, governors, to mayors to use the same vehicle.
The Maung Garuda is produced by the state-owned enterprise PT Pindad, headquartered in Cimahi, West Java. The state-owned company has produced four Maung Garuda Limousine units, with two units designated as official vehicles for the president and vice president.
The Maung vehicle is a tactical 4x4 light combat vehicle. It is named Maung, which means tiger in the Sundanese language.
Quoting from Pindad's official website, the Maung 4x4 vehicle is designed to support close combat operations and mobilize in various terrains. The vehicle is equipped with a 1,900cc turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine with a six-speed transmission. With this engine, the Maung can deliver 136 horsepower and accelerate safely at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.
The range of the Pindad Maung vehicle is claimed to reach 800 kilometers. As a military tactical vehicle, this 2.16-ton combat vehicle can also be equipped with a 7.62 mm weapon mount, SS2-V4 weapon console, GPS navigation, tracker, hi-lift jack, 4.5-ton winch, light fire extinguisher (APAR), and other equipment.
The Maung can accommodate a total of four people, one driver and three passengers. This light tactical vehicle also comes with a choice of a hardtop or open roof. Additionally, this model has five doors on the sides and rear, similar to off-road vehicles.
The Maung is also claimed to be able to cross water puddles or mud with a maximum height of 75 cm. It is claimed that the Maung can climb inclines of up to 60 degrees and side slopes of up to 30 degrees.
The Maung has a length of 4.8 meters, width of 2 meters, height of 1.8 meters, wheelbase of 2.8 meters, and ground clearance of 0.3 meters. Its front suspension uses Independent Coil Spring with Gas Shock Absorber, while its rear suspension uses Rigid 5-link Coil Spring with Gas Shock Absorber.
At present, the Pindad Maung vehicle has three versions for military, civilian, and combat training purposes.
