TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Instagram has announced its new video editing application, Edits. As reported by The Verge, Instagram's Head Adam Mosseri announced Meta's latest offering.
He said that Edits is designed to compete with CapCut, ByteDance's video editing application, which went offline with TikTok. In a video uploaded to Instagram, Mosseri said it is their task to provide the best tools for creators.
He stated that Edits is not just a video editing application but a complete package of creative tools. Although Mosseri stated that Edits will be more than just a video editing application, its main function remains focused on editing.
Comparing Edits with Capcut
1. Editing Process
According to Mosseri, the Edits application is designed for people who record and edit videos directly on their phones. So, it is not for those who rely on desktop editing applications or seek pre-made templates. As cited by USA Today, Edits is designed to be user-friendly for beginners.
Meanwhile, CapCut is a video editing application designed to make it easier for users to create video content quickly using a wide range of templates. While initially launched for mobile devices, CapCut's popularity among both beginner and professional editors led to the introduction of a Windows version, which allows users to edit without a constant Internet connection.
2. Features
According to the description on the Apple Store, Edits supports the creation of videos up to 10 minutes with 1080p resolution. Other features include AI-based animation creation, automatic text creation, and additional elements such as text, sound effects, filters, and stickers.
Edits also provides a green screen video feature, stackable videos, and video overlays. These latter two features are commonly found and used in the short video editing application TikTok, a competitor to Instagram.
The Edits application also allows users to create and edit videos, share them on Instagram, and monitor Reels' performance through Instagram analytics.
The Live Insights Dashboard feature enables creators to map user interests in uploaded videos. This feature not only covers analysis of active users on the platform but also non-users who view the content through various distribution channels. This feature also includes metrics to monitor how often users skip certain types of content.
This feature is the biggest difference compared to CapCut, which does not provide such features.
3. Availability
When announced in January, Edits was available for pre-order on the iOS App Store, followed by pre-order on Android through the Google Play Store. The initial release date for this application was scheduled for March 13, 2025.
However, according to a report from Android Headlines on Sunday, March 2, 2025, after checking the pre-order page for the Edits application in the App Store, the expected release date has been updated to March 31, 2025.
Meanwhile, CapCut has been available since 2020. It is currently available for Android and iOS mobile devices, as well as desktop platforms such as iMac and Windows.
