The international career of Zimbabwe batsman Sean Williams appears to be over after he admitted struggling with drug addiction.
The 39-year-old Williams recently made himself unavailable for national selection when he withdrew on the eve of the African T20 World Cup qualifier in Harare. During an investigation by Zimbabwe Cricket, he disclosed his addiction, and is now in rehabilitation.
‘ZC expects all contracted players to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and compliance with team protocols and anti-doping regulations,’ said a statement released by the board.
‘A review of Williams’ record indicates a history of disciplinary issues and repeated unavailability, which has impacted team preparations and performance.’
His fall from grace is a huge blow to a Zimbabwe side desperately trying to re-establish themselves at Test level. In May, Williams top-scored with 88 as they followed on against England at Trent Bridge, and soon after he made scores of 137 and 83 not out from just 55 balls during a two-match series against South Africa.
His Test average of 45, with six hundreds from 47 innings, spoke of his class, as did eight centuries in one-day internationals.

The Zimbabwean board commended Williams for ‘seeking rehabilitation’, but added: ‘Withdrawal from team commitments under circumstances involving potential testing raises serious concerns regarding professional and ethical standards.
‘After careful consideration, ZC has concluded that Williams will no longer be considered for national selection. Consequently, it is not feasible to continue his national contract beyond its expiry on 31 December 2025.’
