TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korean authorities have requested an arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol over his declaration of short-term martial law.

South Korea's Joint Investigation Headquarters said on Monday it was seeking to arrest Yoon on charges of rebellion and abuse of power. The joint investigation team, comprising officials from the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO), police and the Defense Ministry, said it requested the warrant after Yoon ignored three summonses to appear for questioning.

A court will decide whether to issue a warrant following Yoon's detention request. If issued, it would be the first in South Korean history.

While Yoon is immune from prosecution for most crimes while serving as president, he is not protected from legal consequences in cases of rebellion or treason.

Yoon's temporary imposition of martial law on December 3 shocked South Korea. Yoon has been suspended from his duties since December 14, when the National Assembly voted 204-85 to impeach him.

Yoon, a conservative leader, faces criminal charges of rebellion. The threat is life in prison or the death penalty.

After Yoon's decree, heavily armed troops stormed the National Assembly and clashed with lawmakers, bringing back memories of South Korea's past military dictatorship.

Prosecutors allege that Yoon ordered high-ranking defense officials to authorize soldiers to fire their weapons if necessary when entering the legislative building.

Yoon has defended himself by saying that martial law is a legitimate and necessary measure, citing threats from anti-state forces and obstruction from the opposition Democratic Party (DP).

The court has up to six months to decide Yoon's case. The options are for him to be reinstated as South Korea's president or be removed from office.

At his first preparatory hearing on Friday, the court rejected Yoon's lawyers' request for a delay in the trial. The lawyers asked for time so that Yoon Suk Yeol could prepare a defense.
