TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, assured that the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) recommendation will not affect Indonesia's participation in various international sports events.
"Don't give the impression that our sports are frozen due to the IOC's recommendation, preventing us from sending athletes. That's not the case," Erick said during a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, October 24, 2025.
The IOC earlier urged international sports federations to avoid holding sports events in Indonesia. This came against the backdrop of visa refusal for Israeli gymnasts, who were set to participate in the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta.
Erick explained that the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) has been speaking with the IOC to resolve the issue. He also urged national sports federations to establish direct communication with their respective international parent organizations.
While this process is underway, the Ministry of Youth and Sports will continue to implement the blueprint for developing national sports achievements, including ensuring the participation of athletes in the SEA Games, Asian Games, Youth Olympic Games, and the Olympics.
"There are international events that we must participate in. That blueprint remains our guide," Erick said.
He emphasized that the IOC's recommendation does not hinder Indonesia from sending athletes overseas. According to him, the ministry's primary focus at the moment is to prepare the best athletes to compete at the international level. "Let's not imply that our sports have come to a total halt. No. We are advancing forward in accordance with our existing blueprint," said Erick.
He acknowledged that the IOC's decision is a consequence of the Indonesian government's policy to reject visas for the Israeli gymnastics contingent, but said the ministry remains steadfast.
Erick said the visa cancellation policy aligned with the mandate of the 1945 Constitution and demonstrated Indonesia's role in maintaining world peace and security.
