TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, emphasized that the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking Iranian officials in US and Israeli airstrikes will not lead to the collapse of his country. He called the assumption that the Iranian system will fall a mistake.
"Iran is a powerful and very ancient country. Those who think that by carrying out terror and martyring a few officials can witness the fall of this system are mistaken," Boroujerdi said at a press conference at his official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, Monday, March 2, 2026.
This statement was made a day after the Iranian government confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an attack on Sunday, March 1, 2026. The government also declared a 40-day period of national mourning.
Iran's Constitutional Mechanism
Boroujerdi said that within hours of Khamenei's death, the succession mechanism was immediately implemented. "Because the Islamic Republic of Iran is a strong and organized government, unlike some colonial regimes in the region," he said.
He explained that, according to the Iranian constitution, if the supreme leader is unable to continue his duties due to death, assassination, illness, or impeachment, the leadership is handed over to the Interim Leadership Council.
This council consists of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Eje'i, and an official from the Constitutional Guardian Council.
"This council will hold a session or meeting, and then, through a defined mechanism, will determine the next supreme leader," Boroujerdi said. According to him, this system ensures continuity of government.
Series of Attacks and Casualties
Previously, on Saturday, February 28, 2026, the US and Israel launched attacks targeting command and control facilities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), ballistic missile and drone launch sites, military air bases, and Iranian air defense systems.
As reported by Al Jazeera, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, was killed along with several senior figures in the US and Israeli attacks on Saturday. Early Sunday morning, Iran's state-run news agency IRNA confirmed Khamenei's death. According to the report, Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law, and 14-month-old grandson were also killed in the coordinated attack.
The same report mentioned several other officials among the casualties, including Secretary of Iran's Defense Council Ali Shamkhani, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Abdolrahim Mousavi, Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh in the Pezeshkian government, and IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour.
