TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran on Tuesday slammed Israel’s “brazen admission” of the assassination of former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this year. Iran accused Israel of committing a “heinous crime” and defended its missile strike response.
“This brazen admission marks the first time that the Israeli regime has openly acknowledged its responsibility for this heinous crime,” Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Al Arabiya reported.
On Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz for the first time officially acknowledged that his country was responsible for the assassination.
Haniyeh, who led Hamas’s efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza, was killed at a guesthouse in Tehran on July 31. He was reportedly killed by an explosive device planted by Israeli agents weeks earlier.
Until Monday, Israel had never acknowledged Haniyeh’s killing, but Iran and Hamas have linked the death of the Hamas political leader to Israel.
On Tuesday, Iran’s UN Ambassador Iravani called Israel’s killing of Haniyeh a “heinous terrorist act,” adding that Katz’s remarks showed that Iran was justified in attacking Israel in retaliation.
“It also reaffirms the legitimacy and legality of Iran’s defensive response on October 1, 2024, as well as Iran’s consistent position that the occupying and terrorist regime of Israel remains the most serious threat to regional and international peace and security.”
In October, Iran said it fired 200 missiles at Israel in apparent response to the killing. Israel said most of the projectiles were intercepted by its own air defenses or by allied air forces.
On September 27, Israel also killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a bombing in Beirut, Lebanon. That attack was followed by the killing of another Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, on October 16 in Gaza.
Israeli officials claim Sinwar masterminded Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack sparked Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 45,000 people and reduced much of the Palestinian territory to rubble.
