TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The possibility of Iran withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is being discussed in Tehran, according to Iranian media reports on Saturday.

Related government bodies, including the parliament, are currently considering the withdrawal as a "urgently" matter, as reported by Iran's semi-official news agency, Tasnim News Agency, as cited by Anadolu.

In a social media post, Tehran's Deputy Malek Shariati stated that the "emergency plan to support the nuclear rights" has three main aspects.

This includes the plan to withdraw from the NPT, revoke the related law on the implementation of Iran's 2014 nuclear agreement, and support for a new international agreement with like-minded countries, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and others.

The potential withdrawal arises amidst heightened tensions in the region following airstrikes by the United States (US) and Israel against Iran on February 28, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,340 people, including Iran's then supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

Although analysts say the US has not been clear in its objectives in the war, Washington has long been concerned about Iran's enrichment of nuclear material to levels usable for nuclear weapons.

Iran responded to the attack with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military bases, resulting in casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and flights.
