TEMPO.CO, JakartaIran's Supreme Cyber Council on Tuesday last week, December 24, 2024, agreed to ease restrictions on internet access by lifting the blockade on a number of foreign platforms, including WhatsApp and Google Play. This step was announced by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) and confirmed by Iran's Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Sattar Hashemi.

"Today, we took the first step to lift internet restrictions with unity and collaboration. I express my gratitude to the President, the media, and activists for their efforts," Hashemi said in a statement uploaded on the X platform.

According to Hashemi, the lifting of these restrictions is part of efforts to strengthen solidarity in the country. "We need this solidarity more than ever. This path continues," he said.

In the meeting, as quoted by Antara, the Supreme Cyber Council also highlighted the importance of regulating cyber governance while supporting the development of domestic platforms. However, IRNA did not mention when this relaxation would be officially implemented.

The Iranian news agency reported that the lifting of internet access restrictions would be carried out gradually and not only limited to one or two platforms.

According to The Strait Times, this policy is one of President Masoud Pezeshkian's promises during the presidential election campaign. Previously, since the big protests in 2009, a number of platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube were blocked because they were considered to have triggered protests and opposition to the state. This restriction on internet access has long been the subject of criticism from Iranian citizens, political activists, and Western countries.
