TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Iran has called on neighboring countries in the Middle East to form a regional “security and military alliance” without the involvement of the United States and Israel, saying the bloc should be grounded in Islamic principles and the Quran.
“The time has come to establish a security alliance without the presence of the United States and Israel,” Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said in a video message addressed to the Arab and Islamic world on Wednesday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Zolfaghari said the recent U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran marked a “new phase” in the region, adding that Iran now stands on the front line in defending Muslim nations.
He stressed the need for regional countries to reduce their dependence on foreign powers and return to the teachings of the Quran.
According to Zolfaghari, countries in the region should not need distant powers from outside the region to guarantee their security.
“We must unite to guarantee our security and move towards a collective security charter based on Islam and the Quran as a reference, core and solid foundation,” he said, according to Anadolu Agency.
Tensions in the Gulf have escalated since Israel and the United States launched coordinated strikes against Iran on February 28. Iran later retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel as well as Gulf states hosting U.S. military assets.
The latest remarks come as regional tensions remain high and diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict continue, with Iran hardening its stance in backchannel contacts over the war and its aftermath.
