Israel Appoints Eyal Zamir as New Military Commander, Who is He?

2 months ago 68

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tel Aviv inaugurated Eyal Zamir as the new military commander of Israel on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. The inauguration took place amid the fragile ceasefire deadlock following the absence of an agreement between Israel and Hamas regarding the exchange of remaining hostages still held by Hamas.

Zamir is a retiree after serving as a lieutenant general for 28 years. On October 7, 2023, he resigned after feeling that the Israeli military was breached by a Hamas attack at that time.

"The mission given to me is quite clear, which is to lead Israel to victory," Zamir said as quoted from Al Arabiya.

The battle in Gaza has ceased since January 2025 through a pact mediated by Qatar and Egypt with support from the United States. In the first stage of the ceasefire, Israel and Hamas conducted a prisoner exchange. As of the release of this news, a total of 33 hostages held by Hamas have been released in exchange for the release of 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The war in southern Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel has also quieted through a ceasefire agreement. The war erupted on October 7 in Gaza.

Israeli ministers have warned the country's military that the war may continue if there is no agreement to bring back the remaining 59 hostages. The Israeli army has already withdrawn from several positions in Gaza. However, discussions about the release of the remaining hostages and the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army have not yet begun.

The Israeli-Hamas ceasefire is divided into three stages. The first stage includes a prisoner exchange.

Meanwhile, the second stage of the ceasefire is aimed at stopping long-term hostilities, freeing the remaining hostages, and the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza. The focus of the third stage of the ceasefire is on the reconstruction of Gaza under the supervision of Egypt, Qatar, and the UN.

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem stated on Al Araby television on March 1, 2025, that there have been no discussions regarding the second stage ceasefire. Israel is hesitant to proceed with the second stage ceasefire because they want all Israeli hostages to be freed first, which still leaves the ceasefire fragile.
