Israel Continues Genocide by Targeting Palestinian Children, UN Finds

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A United Nations commission has accused Israeli authorities and security forces of continuing to commit genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes against Palestinians, including the deliberate targeting of children in the Gaza Strip.

In its latest report released on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, said the scale and systematic nature of Israel's military operations have caused unprecedented levels of death, injury, and trauma among Palestinian children.

The commission said it had found evidence indicating that Palestinian children were intentionally targeted and killed by Israeli forces. According to the report, the deliberate targeting of children is among the key factors used to establish genocidal intent under international law.

"The evidence shows that Palestinian children have been deliberately targeted and killed by the Israeli security forces," Commission Chair Srinivasan Muralidhar said.

Muralidhar added that children continued to be killed and seriously injured even after the October 2025 ceasefire.

"Even after the October 2025 ceasefire, children continue to be killed and seriously injured, with continued disregard by Israel for the ceasefire and for the protection owed to Palestinian children under international law," he said.

Palestinian Children Bear the Brunt of the Conflict

The report describes the severe physical and psychological toll the conflict has taken on Palestinian children. According to the commission, many have endured profound trauma, the loss of family members, repeated displacement, hunger, and the collapse of essential services, including healthcare and education.

The commission also accused Israeli authorities of subjecting Palestinian children in detention to torture, severe mistreatment, and sexual violence.

It further stated that attacks on maternal and neonatal healthcare facilities, combined with food shortages linked to the blockade, have endangered the survival of newborns and contributed to rising rates of miscarriages, birth defects, and long-term health complications.

The commission said these conditions have had lasting consequences for Palestinian children and families, raising concerns about the long-term humanitarian impact of the conflict.

Calls for Accountability

In its findings, the commission called for accountability over alleged violations committed against Palestinian children and urged Israel to halt actions that breach international humanitarian and human rights law.

The report also called on the international community to fulfill its legal obligations, work toward ending hostilities, and ensure justice and accountability for victims.

The commission said meaningful action is needed to protect Palestinian children and prevent further violations as the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.
