TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli government has strongly reacted to the election of Zohran Mamdani as the Mayor of New York. Several ministers have accused the Democratic Party politician of being a supporter of Hamas and called on the Jewish residents of the city to immigrate to Israel.
Zohran Mamdani was elected as the Mayor of New York City on Tuesday, November 4, becoming the first Muslim and South Asian descent to lead the city. As reported by Al Jazeera, the 34-year-old politician is also noted as the youngest mayor of New York in over a century.
Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Party and the Working Families Party, garnered over 50 percent of the vote in the three-way race with 91 percent of the vote counted.
He has been known as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America since 2017, describing himself as a democratic socialist. Mamdani pledged to make New York more affordable for the working class and challenge President Donald Trump's policies.
Israeli Government's Condemnation
Mamdani's victory was met with condemnation from several Israeli officials. As reported by Anadolu, Israel's Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli from the Likud Party called the election result a "critical turning point" for New York, a city that has been home to the world's largest Jewish community outside of Israel since the late 19th century.
"The city, which used to be the symbol of world freedom, handed over its keys to a Hamas supporter," Chikli wrote on social media X on Wednesday, November 5. He also urged, "I invite the Jews of New York to consider positively determining their new place in the Land of Israel."
Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also denounced the election result. In a post on X, he referred to Mamdani's election as an "antisemitism’s triumph over common sense," and accused the new mayor of being a "Hamas supporter, a hater of Israel and an avowed anti-semite."
Meanwhile, Israel's Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon also wrote on X that, "Mamdani’s inflammatory remarks will not deter us."
He pledged to strengthen relations with the Jewish community leaders in New York. In an interview with local radio 103 FM, Danon assessed that Mamdani's victory could threaten the safety of the Jewish community, as the mayor is directly responsible for the city's police force.
Mamdani's Stance on the Israel-Palestine Issue
Before the election, Mamdani had stated that he would instruct the New York Police to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited the city, in accordance with the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
However, he also repeatedly emphasized his rejection of anti-Semitism.
During the campaign, he said there is no place for anti-Semitism in New York or the United States on every occasion.
Mamdani also pledged to build a city hall that stands with the Jewish residents of New York and will not hesitate to combat anti-Semitism.
