TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Local authorities in Gaza reported that only 480 aid trucks entered the besieged territory on Wednesday, falling short of the agreed-upon truce terms with Israel.
The Gaza Government Media Office stated on Thursday in a release reported by Antara that a total of 653 aid trucks had been allowed into the area since the truce agreement took effect on October 10. This first phase of the truce was based on a plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the two-year war in the Palestinian enclave.
Under the agreement, 600 humanitarian aid trucks, including those carrying fuel and cooking gas, were supposed to enter Gaza daily.
However, the media office's director, Ismail al-Thawabta, noted that on Sunday, Israel permitted only 173 aid trucks to enter, including three trucks carrying cooking gas and six carrying fuel. Furthermore, no aid shipments were allowed during the following two days.
The office emphasized that the amount of aid reaching Gaza remains severely limited, describing it as "a drop in the ocean of needs." Gaza requires 600 aid trucks daily to ensure stable supplies of fuel, cooking gas, emergency aid, and medical provisions.
Gaza's government agencies stated they continue to coordinate with international aid and humanitarian organizations to regulate the entry and fair distribution of assistance, ensuring it reaches the entire Palestinian population.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have reportedly killed nearly 68,000 Palestinian residents in Gaza, primarily women and children, and have rendered the area largely uninhabitable.
UN Confirms Israeli Plan to Halve Aid Shipments
The United Nations (UN) has confirmed receiving an official notice from Israeli authorities regarding their plan to cut in half the number of aid trucks scheduled to enter the Gaza Strip. This reduction would significantly lower the shipment volume from the approximately 600 trucks Israel had previously promised to allow following the truce.
Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Farhan Haq, stated in a press conference late Wednesday night local time that the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) had sent an official letter to the UN regarding this decision, citing the repatriation of bodies as the reason.
"We are aware of the message sent by Israel's COGAT," Haq said. He added that the UN continues to strive to deliver as much humanitarian aid as possible to Gaza amidst an increasingly difficult situation.
Haq stressed that the UN calls on all parties to comply with their commitments, including the repatriation of deceased detainee bodies and the implementation of all provisions in the truce agreement.
