TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The largest labor union in Italy held a national strike on Friday to protest Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip and express support for the people of Palestine.
The Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL) called for a four-hour strike across all economic sectors, excluding essential services such as transportation and social welfare.
According to the organizers, as reported by Xinhua and quoted by Antara, protests and public meetings were held in Rome, Milan, Turin, Livorno, and Catania.
CGIL stated that the initiative aimed to urge the government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to suspend all trade and military cooperation agreements with Israel until the conflict in Gaza ends and the occupation in the West Bank is lifted.
In its statement, the labor union also called for the lifting of humanitarian aid restrictions, recognition of the State of Palestine, and support for initiatives that benefit the Palestinian people.
At least four other labor unions announced a second strike on Monday, September 22, 2025.
This strike will involve a 24-hour work stoppage by employees in state schools, universities, hospitals, transportation services, and major ports nationwide.
Several similar actions have been carried out in Italy in recent weeks.
On September 18, port workers and local authorities in the port city of Ravenna, located in the Adriatic, blocked two trucks suspected of carrying weapons on their way to the port of Haifa in Israel, as they entered the docks.
Ravenna Mayor Alessandro Barattoni stated that his office coordinated with provincial and regional authorities to issue the request to refuse access, which had been approved by the port authorities.
In a statement, Barattoni said the Italian government announced that it had blocked the sale of weapons to Israel. However, it is unacceptable that these weapons can pass through Italy from other countries thanks to bureaucratic loopholes.
