TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Public Relations of the Cathedral Susyana Suwadie said that the Jakarta Cathedral Church is scheduled to hold three Christmas Masses in 2024 today, Wednesday, December 25, 2024. The first Christmas Mass that will take place is the Pontifical Mass.
The Pontifical Mass has started at 08:30 local time, which can be attended offline or online. The implementation of the Pontifical Mass was led by Bishop Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo together with the Curia of the Archdiocese of Jakarta.
"This Mass is indeed led by the Bishop and later at the end of the Mass, before the blessing, a plenary indulgence will be given by the Bishop to the congregation who attend the Mass," said Susyana to the media crew at the Cathedral Church, Jakarta on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.
Indulgence, in the Catholic church, is the removal of temporary punishment for sins that have been forgiven. Congregants who receive a plenary indulgence from the Bishop are required to have performed the sacrament of repentance.
The second Christmas Mass continued at 11:00 local time. Susyana said that during the afternoon mass, a Family Mass was held. She said that many children would attend the Family Mass.
"The committee, through Bina Iman Anak, has prepared several special events for children," she said.
The Family Mass will be led by Father Yohanes Deodatus, a young priest. Susyana said that the Family Mass led by this young priest will make it easier for children to understand the message of the Christmas Mass. "Then the children will also see a short operetta," she said.
The light opera will tell the story of the birth of Christ, played by children from Bina Iman Anak. The Jakarta Cathedral will also distribute 500 goody bags to children. The gift distribution will take place at three points in the Jakarta Cathedral, namely at the Maria Altar Door, the Yoseph Altar Door, and near the Youth Building.
The last Christmas Mass will be held at 17:00 local time. This Afternoon Mass will be held online and offline, which will be led by Father Albertus Hani Rudi Hartoko.
The Cathedral Church has prepared 4,500 chairs to welcome the congregation who will attend mass. The chairs are spread inside the church, Plaza Maria, Gua Maria, and tents in the yard. They have been preparing for this Christmas mass celebration for the past three months.
For the congregation who attend, they can park their vehicles in the area around the church. Such as at Lapangan Banteng, Kemenag, the post office, and the Istiqlal Mosque.
